The book: "The Country of Others" ("Le pays des autres") by Leïla Slimani.
This award-winning, #1 internationally bestselling new novel is about a woman in an interracial
marriage whose desire for autonomy parallels her adopted country's fight for independence.
After World War II, Mathilde, a spirited French woman, leaves France for Morocco to be with her husband, whom she met while he was fighting for the French army. She now finds herself a farmer’s wife, her vitality sapped by the isolation, the harsh climate, and the mistrust she inspires as a foreigner as tensions mount between the Moroccans and the French colonists. This classic war fiction depicts the struggle for identity and territory amid violence, courage and sacrifice. It's a novel about race, resilience, and women’s empowerment.
About the author:
